Recovering After an Accident Is More Than Physical Healing
A motor vehicle accident can shake your sense of safety, stability, and control even long after the physical injuries begin to heal. You may be doing “all the right things,” yet still feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or unlike yourself.
You’re not weak. You’re not overreacting. Your mind and body are responding to something that felt frightening, sudden, or out of your control.
You deserve support that understands the emotional, physical, and cultural layers of recovery.
You Might Be Experiencing:
Anxiety or fear while driving or being a passenger
Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories
Hypervigilance or feeling “on edge”
Difficulty sleeping or relaxing
Emotional overwhelm, irritability, or mood changes
Pain‑related stress or tension
Avoidance of driving, certain routes, or reminders of the accident
Difficulty concentrating or feeling disconnected
Guilt, shame, or self‑blame
Pressure to “move on” before you’re ready
Stress navigating ICBC paperwork or expectations
These are normal trauma and stress responses after an accident.
How ICBC Counselling Helps
ICBC‑funded counselling supports both emotional and physical recovery. Therapy can help you:
Reduce anxiety, fear, and hypervigilance
Process trauma safely and at your pace
Improve sleep, grounding, and nervous‑system regulation
Manage pain‑related stress
Rebuild confidence in driving or being a passenger
Understand and normalize your reactions
Strengthen coping skills and emotional regulation
Navigate the recovery process without feeling alone
You don’t have to push through this by yourself.
